Professor Shankar Srinivas featured on 'Made The Same Way' Podcast

'Made the Same Way' podcast with Professor Shankar Srinivas

Professor Shankar Srinivas and hip-hop artist Aubz discuss human developmental biology on 'Made the Same Way', a new podcast series from HDBI, Reform Radio and The Gurdon Institute.

In “Made the Same Way”, young artists collaborate with scientists to embrace challenging conversations about research. In each episode, an artist creates an original song or poem which echoes their feelings and stimulates curiosity about research in human developmental biology.

The final episode of the series, which aired on the 31st of March, features Professor Shankar Srinivas discussing the question of "What is human developmental biology and why is it important?" together with Manchester-based hip-hop artist  Aubz.

We speak of science as one thing, and it's not. It's many different things.

In the podcast, Aubz tells the story of how she began writing poetry and music, shares artistic perspectives on human development, and prompts Prof Shankar to answer questions ranging from the basis of developmental biology to the different stages of differentiation.

'Made the Same Way' is a Reform Radio production for HDBI, the Human Developmental Biology Initiative, which is funded by Wellcome. It was produced by Olivia Swift, with help from Jamie Green.

Everyone is different, but we all start as a fertilised egg - we're made the same way. Scientists are trying to understand more about how the human body is formed from fertilisation to birth. Eventually, this understanding will enable better treatments for many conditions such as heart defects, spina bifida, childhood cancers and infertility.
