Following the completion of my PhD studies at the University of Edinburgh, I was awarded an MRC Transition Fellowship to conduct a research project within the lab of Prof Nicola Smart at the IDRM, University of Oxford. I have since received further funding from the Oxford BHF Centre of Research Excellence to continue this research.

My research project aims to elucidate the mechanisms controlling endocardial plasticity during cardiovascular development by using a combination of in vivo and human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) based methodologies. An improved understanding of the regulators governing the transition of endocardial cells to other cardiac cell types, such as the coronary vascular endothelium, will likely be necessary to inform future therapeutic strategies aimed at promoting repair within the adult heart damaged during a heart attack.

Ian currently supervises a DPhil Student, Emma Jones.
