Richard White

Professor of Genetics

Richard White is a Professor of Genetics at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at Oxford. His lab studies developmental processes in cancer initiation and progression. He has pioneered the use of zebrafish and human pluripotent stem cell models of cancer, especially melanoma. His work has identified key transcriptional, epigenetic, and microenvironmental factors that determine whether a given DNA mutation can lead to cancer. Many of these factors depend upon reactivation of pathways normally found during embryonic development, particularly neural crest genes in early melanoma formation. His recent work incorporates aspects of the biophysical environment such as mechanical pressure, which enables plasticity programs during tumour evolution.
