About the speaker:
Kelly Smith is a Lab Head in the Department of Anatomy & Physiology at the University of Melbourne. Her group studies the genetics of cardiac development, using both zebrafish and mouse models. The lab aims to identify new genes required for heart development, with an emphasis on valve and trabecular morphogenesis. Once identified, research investigates the mechanisms of how identified genes function.
Kelly undertook her PhD at the University of Melbourne, followed by training in cardiac research with Jeroen Bakkers at the Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research in the Netherlands. She established her own lab in 2014 at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland. In 2019, Kelly relocated to the University of Melbourne where her lab currently resides.
